Teochew black kueh and Shui Jing bao at Bukit Merah

Teochew Shui Jing Bao and black kueh

Wanted to buy again after the last time Da Yi Zhan wanted to eat. His children bought crystal bao and Xiao long bao but not what he was looking for. He wanted to eat the teochew shui jing bao which he had it before. Finally found about it in the internet and bought for him to eat. After a few months he passed away peacefully. Glad that I found it.

Today, feel like buying it. So got my mum to go with me. She wanted to buy herbal sweets at bugis which she forgot. So we went out in the morning 8am.

But missed the bus 33 , so mum saw bus 26 and says want to go to Uncle kallang eateries. She feel she wanted to buy for 3rd deity princess in the afternoon 1 pm. But the Shui Jing bao vegetarian or the bean and yam only after 12pm. So ordered only the radish version which is not vegetarian. So she thought of buying the pancake from uncle (mum’s second elder brother) and also we have not visited him since the last time helping out when his wife went for eye operation. Since the shui jing bao will be collected at 10.30am and now only 8.30am might as well go to Uncle ‘s place first.

Mum called to order, he says left only 10 over pieces. Mum wanted to take all. When  we there, Uncle left his wife to go with us. Saying he wanted to pay a visit to san yi. His 3rd elder sister. But when reached Kallang MRT, he went with us to Redhill to buy Shui Jing bao.

We originally ordered 30 pieces, but decided to add 10 more. So waited till 11am plus. Uncle did not really know about the Shui Jing bao as Teochew kueh. So when I saw the Ah Ma Teochew kueh. I introduce the black kueh 鼠壳粿too. Mum bought the black kueh and the red kueh with a few variety, green tea, durian, peanut, etc.
鼠壳粿 literally means "Mouse Shell Cake". It is a steamed traditional Teochew Kueh whose succulent skin wraps a filling of sweet green bean paste. The skin is made from a mixture of glutinous rice flour, sweet potato flour, and most importantly the leaves (鼠壳草) of a Pasque Flower (白头翁) species, a traditional chinese herb.

Mum feel that we have not visited Erg u at Commonwealth. Since we are here, might as well pay a visit to her. Erg u has not been feeling well. Health has been poor so unable to go out. Uncle followed us to make a visit. Then realized we should simply take bus 61 to her house at opposite blk 58 instead of taking bus 33 to redhill MRT and then MRT to commonwealth and walk a distance to her house. Hers is 63. Near the bus stop.

Er gu was happy to see us. But we stayed only for a short while at time is 12.15pm. We need to go to buy sweets for blk 524 newspaper aunties the herbal sweets 1kg $9 at bugis, then to Da yi house to give her some Teochew  Shui Jing bao. Before going to 3rd deity princess  which started at 1pm.

Er gu health is getting better now, she is able to walk a short distance. No need to sit on wheelchair. She sent us off all the way to downstair till main road. We kept chasing her home, really don't wish to tire her out.The weather is really hot at 12pm noon time.

We alighted at Bugis MRT, while uncle go his way to kembangan MRT.  After we bought the herbal sweets,  we went straight to 3rd Princess deity temple as the time is already 1.30pm. After that , we went to Da yi house. Almost 4pm. Da yi is still as usual. Happy to have visitors.

What a day!
